Driver/Operator Course - Weaverville Fire Department - Fall 2011

Objective

·       To improve the knowledge and ability of all WFD personnel that may operate Fire Apparatus.

·       Meet the DMV requirement for Class B Endorsement to Operate vehicles over 26,000 gvw.

·       Develop a larger group of Drivers/Operators.

·       For all members to gain a better understanding of the operations of the WFD Fire Apparatus

Ground Rules

·       Open to all personnel.

·       Must attend all classes and Saturday field exercises.

Course Outline

Tuesday Nights, 1900 to 2200

November 8th             Basic Principles of Water; Types of pumps/Pump Drives; Pumping of Apparatus; Pressure control devices; priming devices; Auxiliary coolers

November 15th           Apparatus Operation, Brake systems, Engine retarder; gear selection, Defensive Driving/Code 3 Operations; Positioning Apparatus at scene

November 29th           Field hydraulics; Nozzle Operations, Appliance review

            Handout: Practice Problems

December 6th              Operations; pumping at a scene, wildland and structure

Projects: Inventory Development; Field hydraulics cheat sheet

December 13th            Preventive Maintenance/ Pump Test                  

December 20th           Weaverville Water System; Hydraulics Practices Problem review   

December 21st             Final Exam

Saturdays, 0900 to 1500

November 12th          Driving Skill course       

December 17th            Pumping Operations Final

Sundays, 0900 to 1500

November 19th           Driving Skill Course/Test on Vehicle Check outs/Start of Pump Operations

December 10th            Pumping Operations
