Weaverville Fire District By the Honorable K. Maurice Johannessen, 4th Senatorial District; Relative to Commending WHEREAS, The Weaverville Fire District will celebrate its 100th Anniversary on April 18, 1998, and it is appropriate at this time to highlight its many achievements and to underscore the positive impact that it has made in the Weaverville community; and WHEREAS, Weaverville was established as a town in 1850, and in the following years there were devastating fires, including a fire in 1853 that destroyed the post office, 24 businesses, and several homes and outbuildings, the 1856 fire destroyed an estimated 20 businesses and dwellings, the 1859 fire, possibly the largest, destroyed 47 buildings, and the town suffered another great fire in 1897; and WHEREAS, On April 12, 1898, County Supervisors appointed a three-member board to act as Fire Commissioners, and the first meeting of the Commissioners was held in the District Attorney's Office on April 15 of that same year to establish the boundaries of the Weaverville Fire District; and WHEREAS, The Fire Commissioners established ordinances that lawfully put controls on the possession or installation of stoves, stove pipes, ranges, furnaces, access to attics, ladders on buildings, combustible materials, and many other issues that pertained to fire safety; and WHEREAS, On March 17, 1906, the Fire Commissioners motioned for a tax to be paid by local residents to assist in the purchase of one hand fire engine, three hose carts, five hydrants, and other miscellaneous equipment for the establishment of a fire department in the District; and WHEREAS, The public is invited to the centennial celebration of the Weaverville Fire District which will include an open house at both fire stations (Weaverville's main station is located on Bremer Street and Station 2 is located one half mile up East Weaver Road) and the Fire Museum; and WHEREAS, The fire commissioners will have on display the records of that first meeting date of April 15, 1898; and WHEREAS, The contributions that the Weaverville Fire District has made to the local area are invaluable, and reflect an agency devoted to the highest !deals of professional fire service; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED BY SENATOR K. MAURICE JOHANNESSEN, That the Weaverville Fire District be commended on the celebration of its 100th Anniversary and on the vital role that it has played in providing professional fire service to the residents of the Weaverville area, and that the District be extended best wishes for continued success in the future.
